Pompey are facing a race against time in their bid to snap up Shabani Nonda.
The former Blackburn striker is a target for the Blues after been released by Galatasaray last month.
As a free agent, the 32-year-old is eligible to be signed outside of the transfer window.
But hopes of him featuring against Southampton in the FA Cup at the weekend hinge on whether he can be registered on time.
Any deal must be completed before noon on Friday, while international clearance must also be secured for the DR Congo international.
The likelihood is Nonda will not arrive in time to be considered for selection for the eagerly- anticipated St Mary's visit.
However, Pompey are quietly confident of bringing the international team-mate of former favourite Lomana Lualua to Fratton Park.
Nonda already has Premier League experience, having spent a season-long loan at Ewood Park in the 2006-07 campaign.
He notched nine goals in 34 matches for Rovers, with around a third of his appearances coming off the bench.
The former Roma striker scored twice against Pompey in a 3-0 defeat in February 2007. But at the end of the season Blackburn elected not to turn his loan move into a permanent deal and he instead made the switch to Galatasaray.
Now he is looking for a new club after mutually agreeing to leave the Turkish giants two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, John Utaka is poised to boost Avram Grant's striking options with a return following injury.
The rejuvenated forward has missed Pompey's past three matches with a hamstring problem.
But he is pushing for a return in the south coast derby.
