There is no questioning that four-time African champions TP Mazembe Englebert are a force to be reckoned with on their home continent. Now, having won the CAF African Champions League for the last two years in succession, the Congolese outfit have now started to throw their weight around on the global stage as well.
Club de Futbol Pachuca can vouch for that after going down 1-0 to the Lubumbashi side in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2010 last week. Mazembe's reward for that notable success is for a semi-final against reigning Copa Libertadores champions SC Internacional do Porto Alegre, a meeting the Brazilians cannot afford to take lightly.
One of the factors in the African side’s defeat of Los Tuzos was their ability to combine their vaunted attacking strength with solidity at the back. It was an attribute that matchwinner Mbenza Bedi pointed to when he spoke to FIFA.com after last Friday’s game: “We’re not a defensive team but a team that defends well.”
The Crows’ new Senegalese coach Lamine N’Diaye has had a big hand giving them this added steel. A renowned tactician, N’Diaye’s standing with TP Mazembe fans is such that rate him as highly as a certain well-known Portuguese coach, regaling him with chants of “Mourinho! Mourinho!” after the 5-0 defeat of Esperance in the first leg of this year’s CAF Champions League final.
Since I took over this team they’ve surprised me in every game. And they’re the only ones responsible for their success.
TP Mazembe coach Lamine N’Diaye
N’Diaye has no desire to hog the limelight, however, and is more than content to deflect praise towards his players. “I’ve been telling them all week that all they have to do is to go out and do on the pitch what they’ve been doing in training,” he said, explaining his motivational techniques.
“After all, it all depends on them and only them. Since I took over this team they’ve surprised me in every game. And they’re the only ones responsible for their success, because when they run out on the pitch I have to stop at the touchline.”
Aside from N’Diaye’s valuable input from the bench, the Congolese hopefuls have also been indebted to their charismatic goalkeeper Muteba Kidiaba, whose sparkling saves frustrated Pachuca and whose effusive celebration of Bedi’s matchwinning strike caused much hilarity in the stands. Given the disappointments he endured at UAE 2009, Kidiaba’s joy was understandable.
“Against Auckland City last year I handled the ball outside the box and got sent off,” the keeper told FIFA.com in a recent interview. “People remember me for that red card. This time I want them to remember me for my ability.”
The Pachuca strikers certainly have every reason to remember Kidiaba, who used his reflexes and speed off the line to thwart them time and again, while the woodwork also came to his rescue on a couple of occasions. As Bedi said afterwards: “When you play with that kind of togetherness, when your keeper has a good day and when you have a little bit of luck too, then you get the feeling that nothing can go wrong.”
There is one other factor that makes the Crows such a formidable outfit, however. Prior to the start of each half, the players line up on the goal-line and kneel down to pray, sending out the signal to their opponents that the TP Mazembe wall is one that takes a lot to knock down.

African underdogs take on Internacional

TP Mazembe Englebert’s quest to become the first non-European and non-South American side to reach the final of the FIFA Club World Cup continues on Tuesday when they take on SC Internacional do Porto Alegre in the semi-finals. The Brazilians are intent on making history themselves by becoming the first team to win the competition twice since it was restructured in 2000.
The match
TP Mazembe Englebert-SC Internacional do Porto Alegre, Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, Tuesday 14 December 2010, 20.00 (local time)
The stakes
In disposing of Club de Futbol Pachuca in the quarter-finals, African champions TP Mazembe achieved their objective of recording a maiden win in the competition and improving on last year’s record of two defeats from two matches. To kick on and beat the Brazilians, however, the Crows will have to fly in the face of history: no team from outside the UEFA and CONMEBOL confederations has ever reached the final of the competition.
The Copa Libertadores holders are favourites going into what is their first game of this year’s tournament. Aside from a formidable line-up, Internacional can also point to another statistic full of foreboding for their opponents: in the previous three FIFA Club World Cup meetings between African and Brazilian sides, the Brazilians have won every time. One of those victories was secured by O Colorado themselves in 2006, when they downed Egypt’s Al Ahly Sporting Club in the last four before seeing off FC Barcelona in the final.
The winners of the tie will face the winners of the other semi-final between Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma F.C. and F.C. Internazionale Milano.
The stat
0 - The number of defeats Brazilian teams have suffered in the history of the competition, having won nine and drawn three of their 12 games. One of those draws came in the 2000 final, when Corinthians held Vasco da Gama to a goalless stalemate before winning 4-3 on penalties.
The quotes
“I said when we arrived that our aim was to do better than last year. We’ve done that but we’re hungry for more and we’re going to give it our very best shot to reach the final. We’ll need to improve on our performance against Pachuca to do that though,” Lamine N’Diaye, TP Mazembe coach.
“They’re a strong, quick team and play exciting football, but I wasn’t impressed with them tactically. Given the quality we’ve got, if we can combine with the players breaking from deep, such as [Andres] D’Alessandro or Tinga, we’ll cause them problems,” Alecsandro, Internacional striker.

Abu Dhabi: SC Internacional of Brazil start tonight's semi-final clash with Congo club TP Mazembe in the Fifa Club World Cup, fully aware that they have a mighty big reputation to protect.
While "The Crows" have already done well for themselves winning their quarter-final against Mexico's Pachuca to restore some self-pride as African Club champions, there is no doubt that they will be starting off as the underdogs in today's match at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium.
The African club take on a Brazilian side who have already won the Club World Cup title in 2006 and more importantly Brazilian clubs enjoy a 100 per cent success rate at this premier club championship.
Internacional coach Celso Roth, loaded with coaching experience with clubs in the region including the UAE, along with his squad have had a good look at Mazembe during their 1-0 win over Pachuca. In fact ever since Internacional emerged champion club of South America, Roth and his technical staff have done extensive study on their potential semi-final and final rivals.
Classy players
Fabian Indio and goalkeeper Brito Soares Renan are the only two members from the 2006 Club World Cup-winning Internacional team under then coach Abel Braga, who is now based here in Abu Dhabi with Al Jazira. Kleber, who won the Club World Cup with Corinthians in 2000 adds his experience as Roth will be depending on classy players such as defenders Claudinel Nei, Fabian Bolivar, Argentines Andres D. Allessandro and Pablo Guinazu and strikers Alecsandro Barbosa Felisbino and Rafael Sobis, both having played in Abu Dhabi.
While Sobis is the more popular here having played under Braga in Al Jazira, Al Wahda fans will be shocked to see Alecsandro being the spearhead of Internacional for whom he top scored with more than 50 goals last season.
However, Mazembe will look to ambush their superior rivals with the confidence of having already played here last year and in their win over Pachuca.
Goalkeeper Muteba Kidiaba and the defensive trio of Kimwaki, Kasulula and Nkulutuka have their work cut out as they miss Stoppila Sunzu, who will sit out tonight after receiving the red card in the quarter-finals.
Much will depend on skipper Mihayo Kazembe and the strike force of Given Singuluma, Mulota Kabangu and goal-getter against Pachuca Mbenza Bedi and their ability to penetrate a strong Internacional defence. Against Pachuca, Mazembe attacked and played aggressively earning four yellows and a red card but will have to maintain discipline against the artistic flair of the Brazilian club.
Around 4,000 Internacional fans are expected to match the Congo Club's band "Cent per Cent" with their traditional Samba beats while for the fans an entertaining encounter is on the cards.

A jamais.
Jamais on n’a autant parlé, en bien, de la RDC à travers le monde…
Merci beaucoup Moise Katumbi Chapwe.
