Mazembe tout puissant ?
Double tenant de la Ligue des champions africaine, le Tout Puissant Mazembe a l'occasion d'étendre sa réputation à l'échelon mondial en se qualifiant pour la finale de la Coupe du monde des clubs, toujours réservée jusqu'ici aux équipes européennes et sud-américaines. Les Congolais seront opposés en demi-finale aux Brésiliens de l'Internacional.

Un nom à faire peur. Mais qui se limite pour l'heure au seul continent africain. Depuis 2009, le Tout Puissant Mazembe est redevenu la référence africaine, vainqueur des deux dernières éditions de la Ligue des champions de la CAF, dont la dernière aux dépens de l'Espérance Tunis au terme d'une double confrontation (5-0 et 1-1) qui, pour certains, a surtout confirmé la puissance financière de Moise Katumbi, le président du club congolais, tant l'arbitrage du Togolais Kokou a pu porter à contestation lors de la manche aller. Les Corbeaux, surnom donné aux joueurs de cette équipe, ont laissé siffler les mauvaises langues venues pour la plupart du Maghreb. Et s'attachent aujourd'hui à étendre cette toute puissance au-delà des frontières africaines.

Cette domination continentale avait touché ses limites l'année dernière lors de la Coupe du monde des clubs 2009 que le club congolais avait quittée avec deux défaites à son compteur concédées face aux Sud-Coréens des Pohang Steelers (1-2) et aux Néo-Zélandais d'Auckland City (2-3). Un échec, à l'origine de la campagne de recrutement ambitieuse initiée par le président du TP Mazembe avec l'arrivée de joueurs zambiens et zimbabwéens, que les Corbeaux voulaient effacer cette année à Abu Dhabi. "L'an dernier, nous avions perdu nos deux matches. Il faut faire mieux cette fois-ci", prévenait Lamine N'Diaye, l'entraîneur sénégalais de cette équipe de Lubumbashi, au micro d'African Football Media pour le site de la Fifa (FIFA.com). "Nous sommes ambitieux. Personnellement, j'ai envie de briller pour ma première participation à ce tournoi mais je sais que les joueurs ont aussi très envie de montrer au monde de quoi ils sont vraiment capables."

Les Corbeaux par la finale alléchés...

L'Afrique est déjà convaincue des capacités du TP Mazembe, la seule équipe à avoir conservé la Ligue des Champions à deux reprises (1967 et 1968 puis donc 2009 et 2010). Et Claude Le Roy, l'ancien sélectionneur de la République démocratique du Congo (2004-2006), s'en réjouissait alors au micro de RFI : "Ça va faire encore du bien au football de la RDC qui vaut beaucoup mieux que ce qu'il représente au niveau international avec sa sélection en ce moment. Pour moi, c'est peut-être le football le plus puissant potentiellement pour l'avenir en Afrique. C'est un club bien organisé, ils ont un bon terrain d'entraînement, un bon terrain de jeu, un président qui a mis les moyens pour avoir des entraîneurs de qualité et faire quelque chose sur le moyen et le long terme. C'est comme cela que ça doit marcher dans le football : en gardant de la cohérence sur le moyen terme."

Aujourd'hui présenté comme le 32e club du monde, selon le dernier classement, daté du 1er novembre, publié par la Fédération Internationale de l'Histoire et des Statistiques du Football (IFFHS), le Tout Puissant Mazembe a rempli son premier objectif en gagnant son premier match dans la compétition face aux Mexicains de Pachuca (1-0). Mais ne veut pas s'arrêter en si bon chemin. "L'appétit vient en mangeant. Donc nous allons jouer notre chance à fond pour atteindre la finale. Pour cela, il faudra quand même être meilleur que contre Pachuca", souligne sur le site de la Fifa N'Diaye, l'ancien sélectionneur du Sénégal installé sur le banc du champion d'Afrique depuis septembre. Les Corbeaux, par la finale alléchés, se verraient bien hisser pour la première fois un club africain à ce stade de la compétition et mettre fin à la domination des clubs européens et sud-américains. Mais les joueurs de l'Internacional leur répondront que jamais un club brésilien n'a perdu en Coupe du monde des clubs...

D'Alessandro renaît

Vainqueur de la Libertadores, Porto Alegre entre en scène mardi au Mondial des Clubs. En face, Mazembe (vainqueur de la C1 africaine) se dresse. Mais l'Internacional possède en D'Alessandro un joueur exceptionnel.

Andrés D'Alessandro a déjà trente ans et derrière lui une carrière qui aurait pu être beaucoup plus glorieuse. Mais le milieu argentin a fait des mauvais choix dans sa vie professionnelle et a payé son caractère. Immense avec le River Plate de Lucho Gonzalez et Cavenaghi, il était attendu comme le nouveau Maradona mais il s'est crashé comme Riquelme ou Aimar. En 2003, à 21 ans, les grands clubs lui font les yeux doux mais il décide de rejoindre... Wolfsburg, alors promu en Bundesliga ! Celui que l'on appelle "Cabezon" ("Grosse tête" car lorsqu'il était petit, sa tête était bien trop grosse pour son corps frêle) n'arrive pas à percer en Europe. En cinq ans, il joue 139 matches avec Wolfsburg, Portsmouth et Saragosse et marque 18 buts. Personne n'est convaincu et l'inventeur de la Boba (son dribble fétiche) fait son retour au pays, à San Lorenzo de Almagro. Auprès de son ancien coach à River Ramon Diaz, il se requinque et rejoint Porto Alegre pour y entamer sa renaissance.
D'Alessandro se méfie du Mazembe

Avec l'Internacional, le super gaucher d'Alessandro retrouve son niveau, remporte la Sudamericana (l'équivalent de la C3 en Amsud) puis la Libertadores (la C1) l'an passé, ce qui lui permet d'affronter les Congolais de Mazembe en demies du Mondial du Clubs mardi à 17h00. Les médias ne s'y sont pas trompés, le joueur étant harcelé depuis son arrivée à Abou Dhabi. Les journalistes brésiliens, argentins, arabes et même japonais se sont jetés sur lui depuis son arrivée. «C'est un moment très important pour mon club. Nous ne savons pas si nous aurons une deuxième chance d'avoir un tel trophée», a déclaré celui qui n'a marqué qu'un but en 38 matches de Championnat cette saison (l'Inter a terminé septième) mais dont le rayonnement est indispensable au Colorado. «Cela va être un match très difficile, et il ne faut surtout pas sous estimer Mazembe. Ca va être physique !», a-t-il prévenu. De retour en sélection argentine en septembre dernier, cinq ans après sa dernière cape, il rêve de rattraper le temps perdu. Buteur vendredi pour le TP Mazembe face à Pachuca, Hugues Bedi Mbenza espère désormais écarter l’Internacional Porto Alegre, mardi en demi-finales.


Auteur vendredi de son deuxième but en deux participations à la Coupe du monde des clubs, Hugues Bedi Mbenza a cette fois permis au TP Mazembe de se qualifier pour les demi-fnales de l’épreuve. « C’est notre deuxième participation, l’excuse de l’inexpérience ou de la naïveté n’est plus acceptable. La première s’était mal passée. On jouait bien et on marquait, mais on terminait mal nos rencontres. Ça nous a servi parce qu’on se sent plus en confiance. On profite de l’expérience », déclare-t-il à FIFA.com.

Le joueur de 26 ans espère désormais aider son équipe à à se hisser en finale. Pour cela, il faudra venir à bout mardi d’un sérieux client, l’Internacional Porto Alegre (Brésil). « C’est une grande équipe, d’un grand pays de football. Mais nous sommes sereins et déterminés, assure-t-il. Car nous aussi, nous sommes un grand club. On respecte notre adversaire mais on va tout faire pour le battre. » Les Brésiliens, vainqueurs de l’épreuve en 2006, sont prévenus.

Mondial des Clubs: TP Mazembe vise la finale et la légende

Tout Puissant Mazembe peut devenir le premier champion d’Afrique à se qualifier pour la finale de la Coupe du monde des clubs FIFA s’il bat l’Inter Porto Alegre, ce 14 décembre à 16h TU, à Abou Dhabi.

Encore une victoire et Tout Puissant Mazembe rentrera définitivement dans la légende du football africain. Le champion d’Afrique 2010 affronte en effet l’Inter Porto Alegre en demi-finale de la Coupe du monde des clubs FIFA, ce 14 décembre à 16h TU, à Abou Dhabi, aux Emirats arabes unis. Or, jamais une équipe africaine n’a atteint la finale de ce prestigieux tournoi (Al Ahly avait fini 3e en 2006).

La formation congolaise a déjà réalisé un exploit en devenant le premier club d’Afrique noire à atteindre ce stade de la compétition. Lamine N’Diaye, l’entraîneur sénégalais des Corbeaux, ne compte pas pour autant s’arrêter là : « Nous allons essayer de profiter de nos chances contre Inter Porto Alegre. Ce n'est pas facile, nous sommes dans une Coupe du monde de Clubs, avec les champions des autres Confédérations, il n'y a pas d'adversaires faciles, et l'Inter moins encore. »

Et pas question de rentrer dans des polémiques sur les déclarations prêtées à l'entraîneur adverse, Celso Roth, sur les insuffisances tactiques de son équipe : « Je ne pense pas qu'il ait présenté les choses comme ça. C'est vrai qu'il y a eu des imperfections sur ce plan. Nos joueurs ne sont pas des robots, mais des êtres humains et ils font parfois des fautes. Mais ils seront mieux physiquement (en demi-finale) et plus concentrés. »

En finale, Tout Puissant Mazembe pourrait alors rencontrer un autre Inter : celui de Milan et de Samuel Eto’o. Mais pour défier le champion d’Europe 2010, le club de RDC devra endiguer les attaques brésiliennes en demi-finale et faire la différence en attaque. « Ce match, on va l’aborder avec beaucoup de détermination, assure le milieu de terrain Pamphile Miyaho. Nous visons clairement la finale. A mesure que nous jouons, les étapes sont différentes. C’est une nouvelle compétition qui commence pour nous ». Et Lamine N'DIaye de conclure : « On va se battre à fond (sic) car on veut qu'à la fin du match, toute l'Afrique soit fière de nous. »

Internacional's D'Alessandro warned to keep his cool

ABU DHABI: Internacional's hot-headed Argentine playmaker Andres D'Alessandro must keep his cool in the face of possible heavy marking by TP Mazembe's in their Club World Cup semifinal on Tuesday, coach Celso Roth said.

The Brazilian side, holders of South America's Libertadores Cup, will be looking to reach their second final when they clash with the African champions from the DR Congo at Mohammad bin Zayed stadium (1600 GMT).

Mazembe, playing in their second consecutive Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi, upset Mexico's Pachuca 1-0 on Friday to reach the semi-finals but picked up a red card and had another three players booked.

"D'Alessandro is not a kid any more but he's impetuous and he has some problems in certain situations," Roth told a news conference on Monday.

Roth pointed out, though, that the 29-year-old had gained a new maturity and was back in the Argentina team.

"He knows he cannot enter into the provocation game...He watched the Pachuca game (against Mazembe) and he knows not to retaliate against anybody."

Mazembe's Senegalese coach Lamine N'Diaye had earlier been asked what preparations his team were making for possible provocation from the Brazilian side.

"It's not our main quality to go in kicking...We do not give out instructions to break our opponents or harden the game. We're here to play football," he said.

"We won't change our style of play...We try to keep the players calm but we don't think at all about (opponents' provocation)."

KEY MINUTES

Roth said the opening minutes were key. Mazembe scored after 21 minutes against Pachuca.

"Mazembe attacked right away, they got to Pachuca's area quickly, we have to bear that in mind," he said.

"We need to control our anxiety. We must be 100 percent concentrated because there is no afterwards.

"Pachuca went into their match as favourites and that's the big danger, we have to be wary of being surprised."

Roth said there was still a difference between European and South American teams and those from the other FIFA confederations but that the gap was becoming narrower.

"It's no novelty that African football has progressed," said Roth.

"What stands out about Mazembe is their collective strength. They have good, technical players and a lot of tactical discipline. That's what surprised Pachuca."

Mazembe are bidding to become the first African team to beat a South American side in the competition.

TP Mazembe vs Internacional Preview

Former coach Abel Braga believes Internacional can claim their second FIFA Club World Cup title.

Internacional's semi-final against TP Mazembe is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday night.

Braga led the Porto Alegre side to their maiden success in 2006, when they shocked Barcelona in the final, and he believes they are better prepared this time to repeat that success.

The Brazilians are short-odds favourites to overcome Mazembe, who are aiming to become the first African team to reach the final, before an expected meeting with Inter Milan in Saturday's title decider.

Should that match-up eventuate - Inter must first overcome Asian champions Seongnam Ilhwa on Wednesday night - Braga is confident his former side will be victorious.

"They're in with a better chance because in 2006 nobody believed in us," he told http://www.fifa.com.

"Barcelona were a great team. The thing is that Internazionale are not Barcelona and so won't be overwhelming favourites, even though they are the heavyweight club in this tournament.

"If we assume that the two favourites progress, and from what I've seen so far only a disaster will stop that happening, I think that this year's Internacional are better prepared.

"The Italian club, for their part, have great players but not a great team."

Internacional's current group of players are not looking so far ahead, though, with the last-four match with Mazembe foremost in their thoughts.

The team watched the DR Congo side's surprise 1-0 win over Pachuca in the previous round and skipper Bolivar said: "At first it was only the coaching staff who wanted to go, but we asked if we could go too.

"It's better watching first-hand than on video, this way we can all get together and discuss what each of us thought."

Rafael Sobis added: "After watching the game we could see how physically strong Mazembe are. We're going to be in for a very tough match."

Mazembe Englebert will be without Stoppila Sunzu after he was sent off in the win over Pachuca.

Mbenza Bedi scored the winner in that game, his second goal in the competition after also netting last year, to make him just the second player after Dwight Yorke to score in two different Club World Cups.

Bedi is hoping he can create more history and help his side become the first African team to reach the final.

"They (Inter) are a great team from a great footballing country," he said.

"But we're relaxed and determined because we know we're a big club too. We respect our rivals, but we'll be doing our utmost to beat them."

Roth plays down talk of easy match against Mazembe

Nothing makes a coach and a team as squeamish as the idea that somehow they have an easy game ahead, and Internacional of Brazil find themselves in that ticklish territory as they go into the first semi-final of the 2010 Club World Cup tonight at 8pm at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.

The global football community seemed to believe the South American champions caught a break when TP Mazembe of Africa beat Pachuca of Mexico 1-0 and moved into tonight's match, and Internacional last night seemed eager to play down expectations of an easy jog into Saturday's final.

"Some believe that the African team can be naive and without developed tactics, but we have found that is not true," Celso Roth, the Internacional coach, said.

However, Rafael Sobis, the forward conceded that most thought they would be playing Pachuca, not Mazembe. "It is a big surprise," he said. "But we still must go out and win a championship."

The weight of expectations already burdens South American sides, who like Europe, are seeded into the semi-finals. "We are very aware we are representing Brazil and South America," Roth said.

Mazembe have no plan to get out of Internacional's way. "We did not have a great match against Pachuca," said Lamine N'Diaye, the Mazembe coach."We look for a better one in this match. We did not come here to lose."

Both sides seem to expect a match of speed and skill, with Andres D'Alessandro leading the Internacional attack and Given Singuluma and Mbenza Bedi featuring for Mazembe.

"I don't think you can say we are lucky [to play Mazembe]," Roth said.

"Everyone who is here worked hard to get here."

The noise is going to be much louder. The tune ‘Waka, Waka, this time for Africa’ by the African band will be even more at a fever pitch this time.

Having won hearts with their style of play and celebrations, but not games, in their debut appearance last year, African champions TP Mazembe can dare to dream now.

Will it be Waka, Waka, this time for Mazembe?

The men from Congo have a shot at the FIFA Club World Cup trophy but Brazilian heavyweights SC Internacional stand in their way. TP Mazembe face-off against former champions SC Internacional in the semifinal of the FIFA Club World Cup at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium on Tuesday and an upset victory there will earn them a chance to meet Champions League winners Inter Milan, who should breeze past Korean club Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma FC in the other semis.

TP Mazembe were impressive in the tournament last year but the results didn’t tell the whole story. They went down to Pohang Steelers 1-2 in the quarter-final before losing to Auckland City FC 2-3 in the play-off for the fifth place.

This time though, the CAF Champions League winners have crossed the first hurdle and are in the semifinals. They are the third African club to reach the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup after Egyptian side Al Ahly Sporting Club and Tunisia’s Etoile Sportive du Sahel. Al Ahly made it to the semis in 2006, while Sahel were in the last four in 2007.

TP Mazembe overcame a stiff Mexican test to win by a solitary goal against Club de Futbol Pachuca in the quarter-final. Mbenza Bedi scored the match-winner in a game dominated by Pachuca. That examination will surely have done a lot of good for Mazembe as they meet a much tougher team in the semis.

“Our aim is to develop and play better and to do a better job. We will come up with better play. Technically, we can do better than how we played against Pachuca,” Mazembe coach Lamine N’Diaye said.

N’Diaye pointed out that they won against Pachuca because of the bravery of his players and said: “We will exert all our efforts against Internacional. Our aim is to concentrate on controlling the game and hold onto possession. Ball possession is very important against a team like SC Internacional.”

He said that the bigger the stage, the better it will be for his team. “When you have a bigger stage, we look at that. We look for a higher level and more success. Internacional are a strong team and it will be a good test for us,” said N’Diaye.

But it is going to be tough against Internacional, who won the tournament in 2006. Also, the stronghold of South American teams when it comes to head-to-head encounters against African teams in the competition, is hard to overlook.

South American teams have won all three of their fixtures against African representatives. Brazilian club Corinthians had beaten Raja Casablanca 2-0 in the group phase in 2000, before SC Internacional beat Egypt’s Al Ahly 2-1 in the semifinal in 2006. Internacional had gone on to win the title. In 2007, Argentina’s Boca Juniors beat Etoile Sportive du Sahel in the last four.

Also, Brazilian clubs haven’t lost in the FIFA Club World Cup. In 12 matches, Brazilian clubs have logged nine wins and three draws.

SC Internacional coach Celso Roth, though said that it won’t be an easy game. “We had an opportunity to watch TP Mazembe’s game against Pachuca. TP Mazembe are a very good team. They are strong and they will be difficult opponents. We know about African football. It is competitive football and strong. It will be difficult in the semifinal on Tuesday. Their counter-attacks are very good. We know that we won’t find it easy. They have some quick players and we have to be careful about them,” said Roth.

“African football is aggressive. They have good quality players. Modern football is always competitive. They have the luxury of having already played a game in the competition. But we have a good team. Of course, we will be a bit nervous in the beginning of the game as it will be our first match of the competition. We need to control that and get past that quickly,” said Roth, who had coached Dubai-based club Al Ahli in the 90s.

Kick-off is at 8pm.
