Sihlangu 1 DR Congo 3 Soccer – It was always going to be extremely difficult and intricate for the youthful Sihlangu side to salvage anything positive from this game against the DR Congo.
Having assembled just on Sunday, five days before the game, there was never going to be a miracle at the Somhlolo National Stadium on Friday afternoon despite the fact that at times, the visitors looked to be just an ordinary side.
Watched by a poor crowd of close to 1 000 fans in this World Cup Qualifier first leg clash, Sihlangu to their credit, played better in the last half. The damage, however, had already been done by the clinical Congolese, who had raced to a 2-0 first half lead. The game was basically over as a contest in the opening half. The Sihlangu defence was caught ball watching with only about 18 minutes played when the visitors opened the scoring through Kaluyatika Dloko.
It was a gift really as he rose unchallenged inside the box to power home a glancing header after a delightful cross from the right flank.
The sirens of doom started wailing. Indeed four minutes later, Mputu Mabi made it two with a cracking strike from outside the box, which Sihlangu goalkeeper Sandile ‘Nkomishi’ Ginindza could only watch as it rattled the net. Sihlangu showed promise in the opening minutes of the last half after the introduction of slippery winger Darren ‘Dazza’ Christie and defender Sihawu Dlamini for a holidaying Siboniso Maseko and Zweli ‘Mlilo’ Nxumalo respectively. Coach Caleb Ngwenya also introduced Sidumo Shongwe for an out of sorts Barry Steenkamp. The locals were finally rewarded when Shongwe scored the lone goal after some brilliant play by the quicksilver Christie, whose shot had rebounded off the upright before the aggressive striker pounced to finish it home.
As the inexperienced Sihlangu pressed hard for the elusive equaliser pushing more men upfront, they left themselves vulnerable at the back and it was always going to backfire terrible. In a swift counter attack, Congo won a corner and again Sihlangu was punished when Bobese Gladys connected clinically to stun the home team. It was game over and the locals could not come back despite some ambitious long shots from left back Sabelo Gamedze. Sihlangu now needs to win at least 2-0 in the return leg to be played on Tuesday in Kinshasa, Congo. It looks to be mission impossible.
