Caleb Ngwenya tipped to lead Sihlangu against DR Congo
MBABANE – National Under-20 squad coach Caleb Ngwenya is being tipped to replace Obed ‘Foreman’ Mlotsa as Sihlangu caretaker coach for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against DR Congo.
Ngwenya’s assistant at the junior squad, Ernest Mavuso, is also expected to be the right hand man for the Mbabane Midas City coach at the senior national squad.
According to informed sources within the National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) Executive Committee, Ngwenya was recommended as the rightful candidate for the post during the special meeting held at the FA Technical Centre on Sunday morning.
However, the recommendation would only be effected once the Cabinet sub-committee makes a decision that the national team should not withdraw from the qualifiers.
A company known to this newspaper has apparently pledged a sum of E1 million to rescue the national team from the withdrawal.
Sihlangu is expected to play their first game of the qualifiers next Friday against DR Congo at home with the return game played four days later.
"The meeting was to discuss issues such as the national team’s declining performances in international tournaments. It was agreed that Caleb be the stand-in coach while the search for the new coach continues," a source said.
FA CEO, Frederick Mngomezulu said issues of the national team were on hold for now pending the Cabinet sub–committee’s resolution on the matter.
response
"As it stands now, there is nothing that can be said about the national team. It is after getting a response from government on whether the team continues with its game or not. If we do get a go ahead to partake in the qualifiers, the FA will again call an urgent special meeting to decide on preparations and the technical bench issue," Mngomezulu said.
Ngwenya led the National Under-20 squad during the Zone VI Under–20 Youth Championships in December last year and the team qualified for the semi finals of the regional youth competition for the first time since inception.
